Saint Petersburg was founded in 1703 by the then Russian Czar Peter I aka Peter the Great. The construction of the city started with the Peter and Paul Fortress which now is a prominent architectural feature and a big museum. The Saint Peter & Paul Cathedral within the Fortress is a resting place of all Russian Czars from Peter I to the last ruler Nicholas II. The fortress is located on an island.
The heart of the city is Palace (Dvortsovaya) Square.
The 1754 Winter Palace was home to royal families till the 1917 Russian Revolution. Now it houses the Hermitage.
The Hermitage displays one of the greatest collections of art.
The 1858 Saint Isaac's Cathedral dominates the city's skyline. Its dome carries 100 kg of gold.
